Recognising Employee Achievement
Often, the best way to motivate an employee is simply by recognising the good work that he does. So managers must never underestimate the ability of positive feedback to improve employee confidence and, consequently, productivity. Learn how to give positive feedback the right way and you would not just be rewarding your employee for his achievement; you would also be ensuring the success of the company.
The most important thing to remember about giving positive feedback is that it needs to be shared as soon as possible. When your employee does something outstanding, do not wait for his annual performance review to cite him for it. Instead, tell him right away how impressed you are by the job that he did on a certain project. You must also be as specific as you can. Do not just tell him that he did good work; mention specific examples of the things he did well. For instance, tell him something like, "That was a great presentation you gave. You were able to clear up a lot of our questions regarding the project." Furthermore, to make sure that the positive feedback would have the most impact, mention it in front of other employees. This would give your outstanding employee a sense of pride and accomplishment since his work is being recognised and praised in the presence of his colleagues. Finally, learn to balance your positive comments with constructive criticism so that your employee would not become complacent and continue to improve his performance for his benefit as well as the company's.
